The Marquis – Pub in Central London, Food and Drink near Covent Garden

In the 19th century, legend has it that the pub became the haunt of Charles Dickens.

To honour one of our most famous regulars, you can now enjoy a drink in ‘Dicken’s Corner’.

Now, century’s later, The Marquis is a family owned free-house by The Morton Scott Pub Company.

It now forms our family of three pubs in the Covent Garden area.

As a company, we are passionate about keeping the spirit of London pubs alive.

The Marquis at Alkham Hotel Review, Kent | Travel

An old village inn in picturesque Kent countryside converted into a contemporary restaurant with rooms by ambitious chef/manager Andrew King.

His intimate restaurant is excellent and comes complete with its own sparkling wine from neighbouring Chalksole Estate, bottled by Chapel Down.

The Marquis at Alkham: Luxury Hotel with a Fine Dining Restaurant

Review analysis
location

A 200-year-old former village inn has been converted into a luxury boutique hotel and fine dining restaurant in the heart of Kent’s picturesque Alkham Valley, near Dover and Folkestone.

Nestled in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Marquis offers a seasonally inspired menu created by their head Chef Stephen Piddock.

Supported by a team of chefs from some of the best restaurants in Kent, Stephen prides himself on his contemporary cuisine.

The Marquis was transformed into a fine dining restaurant with luxury boutique rooms near Folkestone following a £1.5 million renovation in 2008.

The building has been stripped back to its original brickwork, extended, refurbished, and furnished to provide a luxury contemporary style and elegance in a rural setting.

An extension last year means it now has 10 rooms, each named after an important character in the history of the Alkham Valley, as well as two cottages.

That day there had been a good catch of brill, one of my favourite fish, and it was on the menu served with black trompette, purple sprouting broccoli and turnips.

As well as the à la carte menu, the Marquis has two tasting menus — the vegetarian “harvested and foraged” at £45 for six courses and the “farmed and fished” carnivore option at £55 for six courses plus £27.50 for six selected glasses of wine.

Local sourcing is, inevitably, not such a theme on the wine list, although English vineyards are reasonably well represented.

After a decent but unremarkable breakfast that did not quite match the previous night’s culinary adventures we headed out for St Margaret’s Bay, where Noël Coward once owned a house squeezed in between the White Cliffs and the Channel.

‘Blending the hip and the wholesome – a vibrant British pub offering the warmest of welcomes’ Combining the best in British pub hospitality with individuality, character and quirky charm, The Marquis Cornwallis is perched on a street corner in the centre of Bloomsbury, surrounded by peaceful garden squares and some of London’s most prestigious museums.

Just a few moments’ walk from Russell Square tube station, The Marquis Cornwallis is the perfect setting for a laid-back yet distinctly memorable drinking and dining experience.

Whether you’re looking for a lazy lunch, post-work get-together or social eats and treats with friends, The Marquis Cornwallis offers tempting and flavoursome food, an explorative drinks menu and a genuine, welcoming atmosphere to suit all occasions.

Mixing period features with contemporary touches, The Marquis Cornwallis is an ideal spot to relax and socialise after a hard day’s graft, as well as an excellent meeting point on account of its nearby transport links.

On milder days, take a pew on the on-street terrace and watch the world go by whilst sipping a glass of something special.
